Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that generally begins at birth or within the first three years of life. It is the result of a neurological disorder that causes delays or problems in many different skills from infancy to adulthood. For instance, both children and adults with autism usually exhibit difficulties in social interaction as well as communication. They also tend to be interested in repetitive or restricted activities. Autistic kids differ from other children by engaging in distressing and perplexing behaviors.

The three different types of autism spectrum disorders are:

Autistic disorder (also known as “classic” autism). It is marked by major delays in language, social interactions, and unusual behaviors.

Asperger syndrome- marked by social challenges and unusual behaviors.

Pervasive Developmental Disorder– Symptoms may be limited to problems with language and social interaction.

What causes Autism?

A single reason cannot lead to the condition of autism; instead, the cumulative result of multiple circumstances, including environmental, biologic, and genetic factors, make a child more prone to have the disorder.

Of these, faulty genes have an important role to play among the reasons for autism. It is believed that in a family with one autistic child, the chance of having another child with autism is about 5 percent.

In a few cases, an autistic behavior is caused by:

Tuberous sclerosis, that causes benign tumors to grow in the brain as well as in other vital organs.

Encephalitis (brain inflammation)

Deficiency of enzyme in the body needed for normal metabolism.

Where western medicine and research has hit a roadblock in the treatment or management of autism, Ayurveda has come to the rescue and is increasingly being used to treat autistic symptoms.

Ayurvedic practices have demonstrated to be effective in supporting autistic patients in becoming functional in managing various symptoms of this condition.

The 5000-year-old procedure called Panchakarma which is a cleansing and rejuvenation program has been found to be extremely effective in combating autism. The purpose of this process is to stimulate the layers of toxins from the body and bring them to the places where they can be excreted. Jeevaniyam employs Panchakarma treatment methodologies, developed in collaboration with Kottakal Aryavaidyasala, a center for excellence in Ayurveda. The purpose of the treatment is to open the doorway to psychological changes by physically stimulating the human body. It has been long established that the mental manifestation of physical actions have a profound effect on the health and wellbeing in all human beings and thus, tackling the physical symptoms are a sure shot way of treating the condition.

We, at Jeevaniyam, try to bring in a combination of treatments like Panchakarma and the herb-based drugs to bring in the absolute change in autistic kids and adults. Even though complete recovery from autism cannot be promised by any of the prevalent methodologies, Ayurveda with its legacy of centuries has proved to help autistic patients cope up with the situation to a great level. Jeevaniyam, inspired by the roots of Ayurveda tries to do the same producing immense results and wide smiles on patients.

Ayurvedic Herbs Treat Autism in Children

Medhya Rasayana or Brain Tonics are specifically grouped into 4 herbs, namely

Mandukaparni(Centella asiatica )

Yastimadhu     (Glycirrhiza glabra)

Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)

Shankhapushpi (Convolvulus pleuricaulis).

When used together, they have a pacifying effect on all 3 Doshas (Vata, Pitta &     Kapha). Brain tonics reduce anxiety and stress, increase immunity,     and mental ability. They prove useful in addressing the physical and mental ailments in autistic patients.

Yoga practices for autism

Jeevaniyam also provides ground for yoga practice in the course plan for the treatment of autism. Early morning sessions of yoga help them have a refreshing day and also provide physical and mental strength. Children with autism are prone to be extra sensitive to lights, noise, smells, texture, and taste and any one of these triggers may cause them to become agitated. Yoga can help to decrease the amount of sensory stimulation they are experiencing by decreasing their anxiety, releasing energy and calming down their burdened system.

People with autism should not be considered weak or disabled and should be given the same respect that all other citizens are given in our society. They should not be blamed for what they are. Autism is not an isolated fantasy to be stared upon with exclamation, but a reality to be faced with patience, care, and love. Jeevaniyam helps autistic children to become functional, contributing members of their families and communities, through yoga, meditation a controlled diet and the practice of herbal supplementation.
