Why Autistic Children Have Sleep Disorders?

By Dr. Reshmi PramodPosted On 13-Apr-2019

If your child is not sleeping at night, most probably you will not be sleeping. More so, if your child is autistic. The world of science and medicine has been delving into the causes of the autism spectrum of disorders, especially sleep disorders.

There are several hypotheses as to the cause, anxiety being a prominent one. Autistic children are highly anxious and have a heightened sensitivity to touch or sound, and so might wake up abruptly at the slightest sound or even a touch.

These children may also have faulty melatonin (a substance that helps to regulate sleep-wake cycles) release mechanism, which could affect their sleep pattern. Also, the amino acid tryptophan, which is required for melanin production, may not be present at normal levels in these children.

Sleeplessness can cause behavioral problems, irritability, depression, and aggression. Therefore, it has to be treated at the earliest. Autism is believed to be caused by the interplay of the environment and certain genetic factors. The pediatric branch of the ancient system of medicine, Ayurveda, is highly evolved and understands the nature of the brain in a totally different manner from modern sciences.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Autism

Ayurvedic interventions will not be able to correct the faults at the genetic level but will reduce the effect of triggering factors by the use of detoxification and purification therapies followed by medications. This will remove any stress (external and internal) that the child may be undergoing, introduce a more wholesome lifestyle, and slowly shift to normal sleep patterns.

Autistic children often have digestion problems like constipation, abdominal pain, bloating etc. So, to correct the digestion and metabolism, the toxins in the body have to be removed. The panchakarma therapy is used for detoxification. It helps in excreting the toxins out of the body and thus purifying the body. The process including oleation therapy (administration of medicated fat), fomentation therapy, purgation therapy, shirodhara (pouring medicated on forehead) basti (medicated enema therapy) and nasya (nasal drops) can be applied in children. There are also rejuvenation therapies to restore harmony in the body and especially the balance between the nervous system and the brain. However, the appropriate procedure can be decided only by an expert Ayurveda doctor.
