Autism is a complicated neurobiological disorder draws back a person's ability to communicate and develop socio- behavioral relationships and is often aided by behavioral challenges. Autism has been detected among one in 100 children and the incidence of autism among children is increasing at a quick pace. The changing lifestyle, food habits are the chart-toppers among the reasons for the advancing pace too. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have declared autism a National Public Health Crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown. Along with the socio-behavioral crisis in children, autistic children tend to show certain cases of hyperactivity along with attention deficiency. Researchers demonstrate that the symptoms of attention deficit and hyperactivity worsen the condition of life for patients with Autism Disorders. The symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) might have the additional and sure impact on the adaptive functioning and quality of life of children with ASD.

Hyperactivity is a symptom or an after effect of varying degrees of mental diseases and medical reasons. One of the most important disorders associated with hyperactivity is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD. ADHD is a disorder that makes you impulsive, overactive, and inattentive.

After revising the levels of hyperactivity and attention, and measures of quality of life, for over 2,000 children and adolescents with ASD was found to have the symptoms of either hyperactivity or attention problems. Both symptoms were found to be appearing in more than one- a third of the count.

ADHD is not described as an entity as such in Ayurveda. But, some abnormal behavior has been referred to in Ayurveda which could be easily correlated to ADHD.

The Charaka Samahita refers to the following:

  1. Dhee vitiation (rational thinking)

  2. Smriti (memory)

  3. Dhriti (retaining/ intellect power of the mind)

This causes abnormal conduct leading to “improper contact of the senses with their objectives.” This results in impulsivity, overactivity, and inattention which are specific notable characteristics of ADHD.

It is generally described that there are two subdoshas part of Smriti (memory):

Sadhaka pitta (controls emotions and their effects on the heart’s functions)

Prana vata (controls the mind, sensory perception and brain)

As Ayurveda points towards these two subdoshas ADHD grounds, medhya drugs (non- tropic herbs which are substances which improve the mental function and its equilibrium) and herbs that pacify Vata are the main line of treatment. This includes neuro protective, cognitive, nootropic, learning aid, herbs, such as N. jatamansi, W. somnifera, Brahmi, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Mandukaparni, Ashwagandha, T cordifolia etc.

After a review of current research, it is concluded that Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Mandukaparni, are “proved very potent to control impulsivity, distractibility, inattention, and hyperactivity though further scientific studies are required to prove it in a scientific world.

There is growing evidence regarding the use of Brahmi for its nootropic and cognitive effects. Specifically, including in children, Brahmi is effective in treating the symptoms of ADHD. Brahmi has been included in certain formulas, as per new studies making it difficult to specify the critical effect and impact of Brahmi. Brahmi as a single herb, when put to study, has also suggested its efficacy for ADHD treatment. Brahmi can be considered in treating ADHD and its associated cognitive effects even though more research in this field is necessary.

Jeevaniyam tries its maximum to culminate the benefits of all the Ayurvedic drugs available so far to bring in its best effects in the kids who approach us hoping to recover soon from the ill effects of autism including hyperactivity and attention problems.
